In the near future all Oregon high school students will be required to meet new education requirements to graduate. Two new standards directly related to career development are:
CRLS are fundamental skills essential for success in employment, college, family and community life. Sometimes they are referred to as soft skills, employability skills or workplace readiness skills.
Students will use their Career Related Learning Standard skills within Career Related Learning Experiences (CRLE). CRLEs are education experiences that connect learning to the world beyond the classroom.
They provide opportunities for students to apply academic, career-related and technical knowledge and skills.
Internships are one example of a Career Related Learning Experience (CRLE).

"Any typical high school kid will think, ‘When are you going to use Calculus in real life scenarios? When are you going to use this?’ Currently, I am working in a research and development group where on a daily basis I use, I’d say, 80% of the math skills that I gained in school… Mathematics, especially on an engineering level in a research group, is very applicable."
