Volunteer Resources

NEM Home

Access to NEM resources is provided after volunteers register for the program. These include:

  • Age-appropriate slide presentations about engineering and technology careers
  • Experiment samples for selecting a hands-on activity – the centerpiece of the presentation
  • Training and coaching support

What Volunteers Do

Provide an approximate 50-minute classroom presentation.

The presentation includes a brief introduction to STEM-based careers along with a hands-on experiment to show how math and science are used in the real world. The experiment gets the students directly involved in performing a hands-on, engineering-related activity.

There are three parts to the presentation:

  1. 10 minute overview of STEM-related careers
    • Slide templates by grade level provided
  2. 30 minute hands-on experiment
    • Experiment samples by grade level provided
  3. 10 minute questions and wrap-up

Co-Presenters

For new volunteers, we recommend pairing with another volunteer as a team. This provides embedded support and collaboration in preparing for and presenting to the students.
